Year 2 is an empowering time for kids: as their reading skill set expands, they begin to understand the world around them in new ways.
Mrs Wordsmith offers a range of resources to support and enrich this important life stage – including worksheets for Year 2, books, games, Year 2 workbooks, and more - all informed by the UK National Curriculum. Some of the resources described on this page are appropriate for other age groups as well, so you may have seen them before.
Kids around this age are typically entering the final phase of phonics instruction, applying the skills they've learned so far to new content, and improving fluency and reading comprehension. For kids who still need some phonics revision our collection of worksheets for 6-7 year olds includes our Foolproof Phonics Part 2 printable. Foolproof Phonics takes kids through the different levels of phonics learning and the terms they need to know, exactly the way they do it in school, and Part 2 continues where Part 1 left off. Although it is aimed at Year 1 pupils, it may still be helpful for older kids. These printables are engaging and fun, and take the stress out of learning letter-sound correspondences. For more fun phonics recapping, add our Blah Blah Blah Phonics Card Game to the rotation. It's a home- and classroom-friendly game that will have everyone laughing.
Meanwhile, kids can improve their spelling with our specialized Year 2 worksheets. Spelling is important: even when it is not explicitly tested, it is assessed in writing. Start with our Spelling Targeted Practice KS1 English worksheets for Year 2, which introduce the key spelling patterns that kids need to know for school at this age. Then, move on to our Spelling Mixed Practice Year 2 worksheets for more revision. These worksheets for 7 year olds and 6 year olds are colourful and engaging, which motivates kids to take charge of their learning.
Throughout Year 2, kids will continue to develop their early emotional intelligence. They'll start to understand their own emotions and the emotions of others better. To help guide and deepen this understanding, our Mrs Wordsmith's 37 House Rules printable workbook draws on social emotional learning research to teach kids to self-regulate and bring essential house rules to life in a fun way.
Beyond Year 2 worksheets, you can expand your child's vocabulary (and creative imagination!) with our My Epic Life Word Book and My Epic Life Daily Word Workout. These vibrant books cover a wide range of topics and are packed with synonyms, antonyms, and overall inspiring vocabulary to show kids the epic scope and flexibility of language.
From phonics and spelling to vocabulary and social emotional learning, Mrs Wordsmith has your Year 2 student covered!
