Mrs Wordsmith Talks Live on CNN

Following President Trump’s recent announcement that the Department of Education will be dismantled, we know it’s an unsettling time to be part of the industry right now. However, Mrs Wordsmith remains as committed to our mission as ever – and if anything, empowering children to fall in love with reading has never been more important. To discuss this as well as what we, as educators, can do to keep fighting the good fight, Brandon Cardet-Hernandez, Mrs Wordsmith’s President, recently appeared on CNN's The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.

The Focus on Education

During the interview, Brandon stressed the importance of maintaining focus on improving educational outcomes for students. “We’re not having the right conversation right now,” he explained. “We’re distracted by the politics of Washington and not talking about what our children need the most.” He highlighted alarming statistics, including that 70% of children are reading below grade level and 60% are not proficient in mathematics. These figures underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions to boost literacy and numeracy skills.

Moving Beyond Politics

Taking the conversation beyond political debates, Brandon spoke about the practical solutions that are out there to support teachers and students during these uncertain times:

  • Teacher Training: Enhancing educators' skills to better support students.
  • Technological Advancements: Leveraging technology to make learning more engaging and effective.
  • Federal Support: Continuing programs like Title I funding to ensure equitable access to quality education.

Conclusion

As unsettling as things do seem within the education industry right now, with political debates that raise questions about where things are heading, it’s important for us, as educators, to remain focused on what – or, rather – who matters most… and that’s children. So long as we remain dedicated to doing all that we can to support their learning and help them develop as students, there’s no reason why literacy outcomes can’t improve. We’re proud of our President for going on CNN to talk about our passion and commitment to this cause. Don’t forget to redeem our free giveaway for Word Tag and our Narrative Journey lesson plan, the perfect combination to help children broaden their vocabularies.
