Words are more than just building blocks for sentences – they’re the keys to unlocking a child’s imagination, confidence, and future. But right now, too many children in the UK are starting school without the essential language and literacy skills they need to thrive, and this gap is hitting our most disadvantaged communities the hardest. In this blog, Mrs Wordsmith gives you an overview of the National Literacy Trust’s (NLT) Early Words Matter campaign [1] and the hard work they’re doing to equip children with the words they need to thrive.

The Word Gap: A Crisis We Can’t Ignore
Imagine walking into your very first classroom and already being behind – not because of your ability, but simply because of the circumstances you were born into. In 2024, over 185,000 five-year-olds in the UK began school lacking vital literacy, communication, and language skills. That’s a highly concerning reality.Children from lower-income families are much more likely to have limited access to books, enriching conversations, and early learning opportunities. In cities like Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester, more than a quarter of five-year-olds start school already having low literacy levels. Unfortunately, the impact of this disadvantage ripples through their entire academic journey as well as future job prospects, and even their mental health.
Why Early Words Matter

The first years of a child’s life are a golden window for language development. Research shows that a home learning environment filled with talk, play, and stories has a bigger impact on a child’s development than their parents’ education or income. Yet, for many families facing financial hardship or lacking support, creating that word-rich environment can be a real challenge. This is very much a national crisis. Failing to support just 106,000 five-year-olds with the literacy help they need will cost the UK economy £830 million over their lifetime. That’s money lost to wasted potential, missed opportunities, and a cycle of disadvantage that keeps repeating.
The Power of Community: How We Can All Help
There’s no magic wand to wave away this problem, but there is hope – and it starts with all of us working together. The NLT’s “Early Words Matter” campaign is leading the charge, calling on businesses, community leaders, parents, and government to unite for children’s early language and literacy. Here’s what’s making a difference:
- Raising Awareness: Shining a spotlight on the critical role of early years in shaping a child’s future, so everyone understands what’s at stake.
- Practical Support: Delivering programmes, resources, and training directly into communities, especially where it’s needed most.
- Empowering Parents: Providing parents with the tools and confidence to be their child’s teacher at home.
- Business and Government Action: Encouraging companies and policymakers to invest in early childhood education and create joined-up support systems for families.
Let’s Change the Story Together
The words we share with children today shape the stories they’ll write tomorrow. If we want a future where every child can achieve their fullest potential, we need to make sure that early words are taken seriously. Here at Mrs Wordsmith, we’re committed to creating resources that support children on their literacy journeys. Why not check them out? Let’s fill every home, classroom, and community with words, stories, and ample opportunities – so that no child is left behind before their story even begins.
