By first grade, many kids have their school routine down and are becoming more confident learners. When it comes to reading, kids will be introduced to new vocabulary all the time, and continue moving through the building blocks of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension). Mrs Wordsmith has a variety of resources designed for this exciting time, including first grade worksheets, books, workbooks for 1st graders, and games. Some of the resources described on this page are appropriate for other age groups as well, so you may have seen them before.
Our selection of worksheets for first graders include our Foolproof Phonics Part 2. Kids around this age typically become more comfortable blending and segmenting words and learning about the range of different graphemes (spellings) used to represent key phonemes (sounds). The second of this curriculum-aligned duo of printable worksheets is intended for 1st graders, and is a step-by-step program that takes kids through the different levels of phonics learning and the terms they need to know. For a break from writing, give kids' phonics practice a fresh boost with our laugh-out-loud Blah Blah Blah Phonics Card Game.
Meanwhile, kids can help improve their spelling with our spelling worksheets for first graders. Spelling is important: even when it is not explicitly tested, it is assessed in writing. Start with our Spelling Targeted Practice English worksheets for grade 1, which introduce the key spelling patterns that kids need to know for school at this age. Then, move on to our Spelling Mixed Practice 1st grade English worksheets for further review of the patterns kids learned in the targeted practice packet of worksheets for 1st graders.
Beyond 1st grade worksheets, you can help your child build their vocabulary with our My Epic Life Word Book and My Epic Life Daily Word Workout. With over 100 pages each of hilarious illustrations, brain teasers, and life inspiration, these books empower kids to flex their creativity and communicate in new ways. Research shows that among many other benefits, vocabulary comprehension helps children read with more ease, which in turn motivates them to read increasingly difficult texts.
For an all-in-one option, there’s our Gargantuan English workbook for first grade. It consists of 1st grade worksheets covering a whole year of English learning, including phonics, vocabulary, grammar, high-frequency words, handwriting, and more!
