Reading is an essential part of every child's education. Our literacy worksheets and workbooks tackle the five building blocks of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. These five areas will help your child grow into a strong and confident reader, contributing to success in English and all of their other school subjects.
We offer reading worksheets in many of our resources. Start by boosting phonics skills and recognition of high-frequency words with our Foolproof Phonics worksheets and Sight Words sticker books. Then, work through our growing collection of reading workbooks that approach reading holistically, at the school level best suited to your child.
For younger readers, it's important to build phonemic awareness as a first step toward reading -- this is the ability to identify and manipulate the individual sounds that make up speech. A good way to work on phonemic awareness is with our phonics worksheets, which teach kids to identify and understand how phonemes differ, then develop phonemic awareness further with activities that teach them to blend and segment individual sounds in spoken words.
Once your child has mastered phonemic awareness, the next step on their learning journey is phonics – the process of systematically mapping phonemes (speech sounds) onto graphemes (letters and letter combinations). Through systematic synthetic phonics instruction, our fun reading worksheets teach kids the sounds that different graphemes make in a structured way, progressing from the most common to the rarest. At this stage, kids will also learn the different ways in which a sound can be spelled.
We also offer worksheets that help with reading fluency. Our sight words reading sheets work well for young kids, while our reading comprehension worksheets are designed for older kids. Once kids master decoding words, they need rich vocabularies to continue to gain reader confidence. Reading Comprehension Vocabulary is a printable reading comprehension workbook for ages 10-15, and introduces kids to new and challenging vocabulary found in reading comprehension exams and classic literature. Armed with a solid vocabulary foundation, fluent readers move through texts at a fluid pace, while simultaneously feeling and comprehending the meaning of the text. Although we don’t have exclusively reading comprehension workbooks, you can find sections focused on reading comprehension in our English workbooks. These cover a full year of grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, and reading and writing curriculum, which includes guided reading worksheets and proofreading worksheets.
Our books and worksheets help kids actively enjoy reading. We know that even slightly older readers who lack fluency are often still struggling with decoding, which may impact their reading progress at school. Revision with the products we’ve designed for younger kids may be a low-pressure way for older readers to get some extra help.
You can also help kids work on their vocabulary with one of our hilariously illustrated Word a Day books. These books focus on the words that kids need to know for school, and present them within a relevant context. Context helps kids better understand what each word means, how it relates to the world around them, and how it is used. Building context around a new word helps kids better retain this word in memory.
Wherever your child is on their reading journey, our expert-designed reading workbooks, reading worksheets, games, and books are guaranteed to give them the tools they need to become great readers.
