Roblox + Mrs Wordsmith = Vocab Mastery!

Using characters designed by Craig Kellman (Madagascar, Trolls, Hotel Transylvania) and based on our award-winning game Word Tag, comes the newest literacy adventure by Mrs Wordsmith.

Players choose a "word of power" to battle various enemies and move through the game. Each "Word of Power" includes literacy information and produces a specific effect within the game. Choose the word "shock" to electrify your enemies! As opponents are defeated, players gain new powers, growing their vocabulary.

When a word is chosen, a voiceover pronounces the word and definition together. This is called explicit vocabulary instruction, which combines explanations of a word's meaning with other information like spelling, pronunciation, and visual demonstrations to embed new information deeply.

Pedagogically speaking, game-play brings the meaning of each word to life in a visually thrilling way. This helps children understand what a word means in practice, leading to improved retention.

Word Pools and Spaced Repetition

Encountering a word once is not enough for it to be learned. The most effective method for ensuring a word will be remembered is spaced repetition. Spaced repetition is an evidenced-based technique where the intervals between encounters with a given word become gradually longer. Frequent repetitions earlier on, followed by more spread-out repetitions later on, ensure that children develop an intuitive understanding of a word.

Word Challenges

Players encounter word challenges along their adventures. These challenges are quiz-like in structure, testing the player on their accumulated vocabulary. These quizzes pit two words against each other and ask players to identify the correct one. When the correct answer is chosen, players are rewarded with gameplay upgrades. This fosters an intrinsic motivation for learning.

Runes

Runes are obtained as rewards from gameplay and always match a word in the player's current library. These runes represent a common word pair (i.e., "heat" with "searing") and, when used with the primary Word of Power, confer a stat bonus on the player. This bonus helps them defeat enemies and obstacles to move through the game. Pedagogically speaking, word pairs help players gain a deeper understanding of a word's context, enriching their connection to it.

Sentence Challenges

Players test their accumulated vocabulary through sentence challenges. Using a strategic priority system, these challenges funnel previously encountered words from the Word Challenges into these more advanced quizzes. They feature unused or incorrect answers from previous Word Challenges to familiarize players with difficult words, fostering greater proficiency.
