In the summer of 2022, we recruited 19 children to participate in the project testing the efficacy of Word Tag. Here's what we found out:
For kids to truly integrate new words, they need to experience the word in its form, in its context, and in relation to other words. So we've built a universe that's centered around exactly that: opportunities for students to encounter words in meaningful ways. Pairing this approach with spaced repetition, Word Tag gives students 6-8 exposures at increasing time intervals so they can achieve vocabulary mastery.
On their first encounter with a word, students learn spelling and pronunciation by arranging jumbled word parts correctly. They then see a kid-friendly definition to understand the word's meaning.
Students learn to use words in context by selecting the appropriate word to complete engaging sentences from different genres, helping them generalize the use of the word and grapple with its meaning.
Students enhance their understanding of a word's meaning by choosing synonyms or word pairs that can be used with the main word. By exploring relationships with other words, kids develop a more robust picture of how the word can be used.
After reaching the Daily Word Stars goal, students reinforce their learning through a fast-paced quiz that involves selecting synonyms or word pairs. Experiencing the word multiple times helps the players commit the word to memory.
Encompassing school subjects, exam materials, and totaling approximately 6000 words,
our word lists allow you to choose and assign the words students learn while they play Word Tag.
It's always a good sign when kids cheer when you ask them to play a certain game, and it was the typical response when they were asked to play Word Tag.
