By Year 1, at age 5 or 6, many kids have their school routine down and are becoming more confident about learning. When it comes to reading, kids will be introduced to new vocabulary constantly as they continue moving through the building blocks of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension). Mrs Wordsmith has a variety of resources designed for this phase, including Year 1 worksheets, books, Year 1 workbooks, and games. Some of the resources described on this page are appropriate for other age groups as well, so you may have seen them before.
Our selection of worksheets for 5-6 year olds includes Foolproof Phonics Part 2, the second part of a National Curriculum-aligned programme covering the different levels of phonics learning. Kids around this age typically become more comfortable blending and segmenting words and learning about the range of different graphemes (spellings) used to represent key phonemes (sounds). They will practise these skills in Foolproof Phonics. For a break from worksheets, turbo-charge your phonics practice with our laugh-out-loud Blah Blah Blah Phonics Card Game.
Meanwhile, kids can improve their spelling with our spelling worksheets for Year 1. Spelling is important: even when it is not explicitly tested, it is assessed in writing. Start with our Spelling Targeted Practice Year 1 English worksheets, which introduce the key spelling patterns that kids need to know for school at this age. Then, move on to our Spelling Mixed Practice Year 1 English worksheets for more practice. These printable worksheets for 6 year olds are convenient to use at home or in the classroom.
Beyond Year 1 worksheets, you can help your child build their vocabulary with our My Epic Life Word Book and My Epic Life Daily Word Workout. Research shows that among many other benefits, vocabulary comprehension helps kids read with more ease, which in turn motivates them to read increasingly difficult texts. With over 100 pages each of hilarious illustrations, brain teasers, and life inspiration, these books empower kids to flex their creativity and communicate in new ways.
