Champions of Literacy and Storytelling

We are thrilled to have joined the National Literacy Trust as part of their Young City Poets programme, a powerful initiative that empowers young people to find their voice through poetry, storytelling, and creativity.

As champions of literacy and visual storytelling, we’re excited to support an initiative designed to inspire the next generation of writers and illustrators.

About the Young City Poets Programme

The Young City Poets initiative brings together schools, young writers, creative organisations, and literary partners to celebrate the vibrant voices of young people across the UK. Through workshops, live events, and creative challenges, participants are encouraged to explore identity, community, and the world around them through poetry and art.

This year’s programme included a special illustration workshop, proudly supported by Mrs Wordsmith, offering students the chance to learn from working artists and explore how visual storytelling brings poetry to life.

Inside the Workshop: Learning With Our Featured Artists

Our workshop was led by four of our talented artists, who guided students through:

  • How illustration helps shape storytelling

  • Visualising ideas from poetry

  • Turning words into expressive characters

  • Creative tips from professional illustrators

The Young City Poets Anthology 2025/2026

Following the workshops, students developed and refined their poetry inspired by visits to iconic London locations including St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, the London Archives, London Docklands, Keats House, and Guildhall Art Gallery.

Their work has now been brought together in the Young City Poets Anthology 2025/2026, celebrating the creativity and imagination of young writers across London. The anthology features poetry written by pupils from participating schools and artwork inspired by the cultural venues they visited.

The project is part of the National Literacy Trust’s Young Writers programme, which connects young people with professional poets and real audiences

There were 100s of inspiring poems from students across the city. Here's a few amazing examples of the poems you can find inside the anthology created by school students across the UK.

Cover Competition Winners

As part of the programme, students were invited to design a cover illustration inspired by their poetry.

From 1000s of talented students with their ideas and designs our illustrator team has decided of the winner and the runners-up of this competition. The whole mrs Wordsmith's team is proud of the students competition and we can't thank all the teachers and students enough!

And the winner is... Matheus - Year 5 St Edward's School
