MRS WORDSMITH IN THE CLASSROOM

MRS WORDSMITH IN THE CLASSROOM

Two things are true: we have a major literacy problem, and we have incredibly dedicated educators itching for accessible resources that will help them solve it. That’s where we come in. At Mrs Wordsmith, we are laser-focused on closing the reading gap. Our products focus on where literacy problems start and widen: phonics, fluency, and vocabulary.

We know schedules get tight, prep time is limited, and educators need evidence-based resources that accelerate learning, deepen engagement and save valuable time. Our team of educators and artists design easy-to-use tools that align seamlessly to your curriculum. Using the Science of Reading, game-based learning, characters kids (and grownups) love and a whole lot of humor, Mrs Wordsmith wants to help teachers win so that our students can achieve.

VIDEO GAMES MADE FOR LEARNING

Mrs Wordsmith's team of teachers, video game designers, and literacy experts have come together to build high-energy and high-impact games that center learning without compromising on fun. Studies show that game-based learning can boost literacy skills by up to 34%  compared to traditional methods [1]. Our game-based learning approach is designed for flexibility. Use our games in the classroom to drive small group instruction, scaffold supports, and track progress. Or, send them home to extend learning and encourage extra practice.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: PHONICS

68% of US fourth graders are not proficient readers. We know that is rooted in lacking foundational phonics skills. Readiculous uses the Science of Reading to drive early skill development in reading foundations. Students move through an evidence-based learning sequence of phonemes and high-frequency sight words as they strengthen reading skills. Alongside our cast of zany characters, kids help unlock new stories and explore a magical treehouse while conquering phonics. Daily progress reports are shared with parents so that they can celebrate successes and track growth zones. The 20 minutes of daily gameplay allows for teachers to use the tool in class as a whole group or while supporting small-group interventions. Clever integration and teacher dashboard coming soon.

STRENGTHEN VOCABULARY WITH FUN

The vocabulary gap has a cascading effect. Children with larger vocabularies perform better in school and have greater opportunities later in life. But it requires direct instruction and repeated exposure. Word Tag uses machine learning and the science of spaced repetition to deliver a just-right vocabulary challenge. This high-voltage game has students zipping through new worlds, unlocking fun gear, and unlocking new words, and deepening vocabulary acquisition. The 25 minutes of daily gameplay allows for teachers to use the tool in class as a whole group or while supporting small-group interventions.

Word Tag increases students’ vocabulary scores by 43% in their first month of playing the game.

Words of Power   |   Ages 7-13

BECAUSE FEELINGS NEED WORDS

One of the biggest challenges of social-emotional learning (SEL) is helping students expand the vocabulary that will help them identify and express abstract feelings and complex emotions. This SEL vocabulary game helps students learn new words for their feelings and explore them in a game-based environment so that they can own it in the real world. Players choose a "word of power" to battle the game’s enemies and explore the island. As opponents are defeated, players gain new powers, growing their feelings-focused vocabulary. The 25 minutes of daily gameplay allows for teachers to use the tool in class as a whole group or while supporting holistic SEL learning.

CARD GAMES FOR THE CLASSROOM

At Mrs Wordsmith, we know that play-based learning and small group activities equal classroom success. We developed easy-to-use card games that focus on literacy and inspire collaboration. Our educators use these learning tools to strengthen skills during station work, small group pull-outs, and for fun with the whole class. Research shows that guided play has a positive effect on language development and relationship building - two things every classroom needs and deserves.

Blah Blah Blah Phonics Card Game

Blah Blah Blah is the hilariously fun and effective phonics card game for ages four and up. The game was developed with teachers and phonics experts and is powered by the Science of Reading. With seven cards to start, students work to get rid of their hand by matching phonemes to their opponents’ word cards. Look out - things get exciting when someone plays a “reverse” or “draw four” card! Inside the box, you’ll find three card decks for different levels of difficulty.

Storyteller’s Card Game

Great writers know the right words to use. Teachers know that requires a lot of explicit vocabulary instruction. Our team made Storyteller’s Card Game to help expand vocabulary while creating joyful opportunities for students to practice using new and complex words in their daily life. Three or more players come together to battle it out over the best word to match a story prompt. Students turn being the “judge,” selecting words from their classmates. Teachers love to play this game in small groups, during station, or to get the juices flowing before a writing exercise.

Vocabularious   |   For ages 8-12

VOCABULARIOUS CARD GAME

Every teacher is searching for a way to do systematic vocabulary instruction that isn’t boring. That’s where play comes in. Students choose between three games that will help them practice new and old words in different ways. In Word for Word, students exercise their memory and vocabulary skills as they work to match words together. Lost for Words is a race to get rid of all of the words in a player’s hand as they encounter vocabulary words illustrated with our hilarious characters. In Distractionary, players act out words for their teammates while the opposing team tries to distract them. All three games focus on descriptive vocabulary that helps boost speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills - an easy-to-use tool for any classroom.

Grade Level Workbooks

Mrs Wordsmith’s grade level workbooks are a teacher’s best friend, helping deliver extra practice in all the essential literacy skills you’re teaching. Each workbook features pages and pages of grade level-aligned practice, accompanied by silly tales and wacky characters. Teachers love to use these in the classroom in conjunction with their ELA curriculum, for targeted work for students who could use a little extra practice, and as gifts for families to backpack home for use after school.

Printables

Practice makes progress - and that’s why we created our expansive set of printable worksheets meant to increase dosage in essential literacy skills. Designed to complement your instruction and curriculum, these worksheets help students integrate the concepts that you cover in class. Support spelling, handwriting, vocabulary, phonics, creative writing, and more.
