overview

The ability to decode words is crucial to reading, but a number of high frequency words are still worth learning whole.

For example, some words cannot be “sounded out” in the usual way using phoneme-grapheme correspondences because they have irregular spellings. In these cases, what you see is not what you hear. Not all sight words are phonemically irregular in that way - some are just worth knowing whole because of how frequently they are used.

The two most common lists of sight words are Dolch words and Fry words. Both Dolch and Fry word lists are based on the most frequently occurring words in the English language. These lists can be printed out and kept for reference.

Deep Dive

Read our report on the Science of Reading. Research-based reading instruction must incorporate the 5 pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This report provides an easy to understand overview of each of these pillars and explains the important connection between how the brain learns to read (the Neuroscience of Reading) and how we teach children to read (The Science of Reading Instruction). It also explains why helping children build connections between letters and sounds, through phonics and phonemic awareness, is so crucial for the developing reading mind. This report is perfect for sharing with colleagues and friends!
