By Year 1, at age 5 or 6, many kids have their school routine down and are becoming more confident about learning. When it comes to reading, kids will be introduced to new vocabulary constantly as they continue moving through the building blocks of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension). Mrs Wordsmith has a variety of resources designed for this phase, including Year 1 worksheets, books, Year 1 workbooks, and games. Some of the resources described on this page are appropriate for other age groups as well, so you may have seen them before.
Our selection of worksheets for 5-6 year olds includes Foolproof Phonics Part 2, the second part of a National Curriculum-aligned programme covering the different levels of phonics learning. Kids around this age typically become more comfortable blending and segmenting words and learning about the range of different graphemes (spellings) used to represent key phonemes (sounds).
